Global health and hygiene company Reckitt turned to us for strategic stakeholder engagement and media management surrounding their £105 million Centre for Scientific Excellence (CfSE) in Hull. Our objectives included guiding the project through the planning process, managing ongoing media interest, and organising high-profile events to communicate the benefits of the development, which would secure 1,200 jobs and attract top scientific talent to Hull. Over the course of the 2.5-year development period, we also supported Reckitt in maintaining positive relationships with local authorities, business groups, and the broader community.
We executed a comprehensive stakeholder engagement plan, beginning with a VIP event that brought together key figures from local business communities, MPs, and regional authorities. This event, which featured a presentation by Reckitt’s Senior Vice President for Global R&D, Sharon James, successfully showcased the significance of the CfSE to Hull’s economic and scientific future. Extensive media coverage across local and regional outlets helped raise awareness, and our careful media management ensured consistent positive press throughout the development phase.
Our roadshow strategy took presentations and exhibitions to influential local groups, such as the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce, East Riding Council, and Humber LEP. This direct engagement fostered strong support for the development and helped pressure Hull City Council to fast-track planning consent, which was achieved at the first opportunity. This success was met with widespread approval from Reckitt, local business leaders, and stakeholders who recognised the transformative impact of the investment.
Throughout the construction phase, we continued to manage media relations, ensuring sensitive aspects of the project were handled discreetly and content creation around the development was strategically aligned with Reckitt’s objectives. Our work not only secured fast planning approval but also led Reckitt to recognise the importance of local engagement. As a result, they created a dedicated role within the company focused on building stronger ties with the Hull community. Today, Reckitt stands as a key player in Hull’s business landscape, alongside other major names like Siemens and Smith & Nephew.
